Youth Sports: Increasingly Costly and Damaging
publication date: Apr 12, 2009
Sometimes we venture outside the area of money and this time it's into the venue of youth sports. Actually money is a big issue when it comes to youth sports. Travel teams can cost big bucks. Ditto for private coaching.
Professional coaches seeking to make more money aren't thinking enough about the long-term health and welfare of their participants. How else can you explain coaches pushing kids to play the same sport year-round beginning at increasingly younger ages.
In this book excerpt from the newly published book, Until It Hurts: America's Obsession with Youth Sports and How It Harms Our Kids, by Mark Hyman (Beacon Press), the author highlights the dysfunction increasingly found in youth sports today. His analysis of Little League baseball is spot on, especially that organization's looking the other way regarding young pitchers throwing arm-damaging curve balls.
I haven't read this book yet but the excerpt is well worth reading. (I have read Ultraprevention which is a well-done, personal health book that Hyman co-authored.)
